Server License Purchase - Important Information

iVisit Domain and DNS

An iVisit server is licensed to serve a specific iVisit domain name. You may choose whatever iVisit domain name you wish, as long as you can establish a DNS entry that allows all client hosts to resolve "ivisit.your_domain" to the IP address where the server is currently running. Typically, you would use either an alias (CNAME Record) or hostname (A Record) to create this mapping. For example, if you choose "mybiz.com" as your iVisit domain name, then you must establish a DNS entry for "ivisit.mybiz.com" that will allow the clients to locate the server for your domain. If we are hosting your domain then a 'CNAME ivisit.mybiz.com ivisit.net' entry will be needed.

FAQ

  1. Can I logon to the server just by typing it's numeric IP address?
No. The iVisit server must be identified by a domain name. The iVisit client will prefix "ivisit." to the beginning of the domain name before doing DNS resolution. If you entered 1.2.3.4 on the iVisit logon, the iVisit client would ask the host to resolve "ivisit.1.2.3.4" to an IP address.
  2. Why can't I just use a hostname I have already defined as my iVisit domain name?
The iVisit clients will always append "ivisit." to the beginning of the iVisit Domain before doing the DNS resolution to locate the actual server. This "ivisit." prefix serves the same function as an "MX" record does for e-mail DNS, to insure that the addressing domain is independent of the particular host which the server is running on

Where to locate your server

If the clients who will be using the server are not all located in a common IP address space, then care must be taken in where the server is located. Basically, when 2 clients try to connect, they will try to reach each other at the same IP address at which the iVisit server sees them. So, for example, if the server is installed in a private address space, and a client is within that same private address space, then the server will see the client at their private IP. Other clients will try to reach them there also, which will fail if the other client is not also in that same private address space.

So, if you have clients in multiple private address spaces, then it is best to install the server outside of those private address spaces. That way the server will see each client at a NAT (address, port) which should be routable to the other clients. It is fine to have the server in a private address space behind a NAT, as long as all of the clients who will be using it are also in that same private address space. If this is not the case, it is still possible that a client-to-client connection may succeed, as long as the servers can see at least 1 of the 2 clients at an IP address that is routable to the other client.

If you have any doubts or questions about what domain name to use, how to establish the DNS entry or where to locate your server, please contact iVisit on before confirming your order.
