Version Update Information

What’s new in 3.7.5 PC and Mac 3.7.2

1. 640 x 480 video
2. Rebroadcast
3. Minor bug fixes from previous releases

What’s new in 3.7.4

1. New audio/video message capability
2. Minor bug fixes from previous release; no major changes.

What’s new in 3.7.2

1. The main change from previous versions is the addition of audio/video messaging capabilities. This allows you to send short audio/video clips to other users without opening a live connection. The audio/video file is sent directly from you to the other person, without passing through a server. This means that you must both be logged on before the transfer will occur. Once you send the message, iVisit will watch for the earliest chance to transfer it. For best performance, you should leave iVisit logged on all the time.
2. To send an audio/video message push the new "camera" button on the remote video window. When you let the button up, the recording will be sent. Optionally, a dialog will open and give you the opportunity to cancel. The first time you receive and audio/video message from a certain user, you choose whether to receive all or block all messages from that user.
3. If you send a message to someone running an older version of iVisit, it will create a link in their chat window to receive and open it like an ordinary file transfer.

What’s new in 3.6.4

1. Minor bug fix.

What's new in 3.6.3

1. Fixed bug that would prevent Sharing window Send function from working
2. Fixed bug that would prevent Guest List thumbnail image from being properly transmitted
3. Fixed bug with audio mute
4. Fixed bug that would sometimes cause audio to fail on QuickTime export of iVisit recordings

What's new in 3.6.2

1. Internal re-architecture to improve performance
2. Miscellaneous bug fixes

What's new in 3.6.1

1. New audio compression algorithms support mp3 quality stereo and much improved voice fidelity
2. New audio options under "Compression Settings..." menu allow you to choose separate compression parameters for device input (e.g., microphone) and file playout (e.g., mp3 drag and drop on local video). If you are connected to anyone who cannot decode new formats (using 3.5 or older), then iVisit will automatically revert to old audio encoding (the next time transmission stops, if transmission is ongoing). To create iVisit recordings that can be played with older versions of iVisit, you must choose "ADPCM" on the Audio > Codec pop-up menu.
3. Internal re-architecture to improve performance
4. Miscellaneous bug fixes

What's new in 3.5.3

1. Fixed bug with live URL sharing

What's new in 3.5.2

1. Audio playout upgraded to use OSX CoreAudio instead of old-style SoundManager

2. Miscellaneous bug fixes

What's new in 3.5.1

1. New feature to send files and folders to other users without opening a live call. To send a file or folder to someone, drag and drop the file onto their video window, or onto the chat messaging area for them. Or, choose Send File... from the pop-up menu on their video window. They will receive a special iVisit message with link to click on if they wish to receive. Once they choose to receive, iVisit will attempt to transfer the file as soon as possible when you are both online. If you have sends or receives pending, you should leave iVisit logged on always for quickest completion.

2. New feature to save iVisit recordings as QuickTime .mov files. This is available for iVisit Plus users only. Create or open an existing iVisit recording (.ivb file). Then choose "Save as QuickTime" from the Recording pop-up menu.

3. New feature to create URL invites that you can e-mail to your friends. Clicking on the URL allows them to logon to iVisit as your "guest" without registering for their own iVisit account (although they must have iVisit software installed). Choose "Create Invite..." from the Tool menu to use this feature

4. Fixed bug that could prevent logon if you had too many unread messages or missed calls stored on the server

5. Miscellaneous bug fixes.

What's new in 3.4.3

1. The server supports a new type of object called a "Contacts List." When you are joined to a Contacts List, you remain a member even when you are not logged on. Currently, only the server administrator can create Contacts Lists. If a List is Contacts, the Join button will say "Join Contacts List" and those members who are online will show green dot.
2. When someone joins or leaves a List which you are a member of, a message is displayed in the chat window channel for that List. You can disable these "Join Alerts" using the Chat Window pop-up menu.
3. .ivb script files support new features for logging on and automatically joining a location on the directory or calling another user by opening the .ivb file.
4. New "guest logon" feature allows people who know your "guest password" to logon to iVisit as your "guest" without registering for their own account. Guests have limited privileges, and may only call/message their own Host, or visit the Host's own Home. This feature may not be available depending on current server settings. If it is currently available, the "Change Guest Password..." menu item under Settings will be active.
5. Improved media transport for speedier video

2. Disabled procedure for automatically attempting to re-initialize video capture when the signal is lost

What's new in 3.3.8

1. "Echo suppression" is automatically disabled if you are playing audio from a Quicktime file to prevent unexpected variations in volume.

2. If you choose "Play File to Network" from the iVisit File menu, you can select either an iVisit recording (".ivb") or a QuickTime compatible file to play.

3. If you drag and drop an iVisit recording (.ivb) on your local video window, it will play out to the network in place of your live audio/video.

4. iVisit will save your video settings only on a normal exit. If iVisit crashes, then the next time you start iVisit, the previous video settings will not be remembered. This should work around an apparent bug in QuickTime 6.5.2 that would cause a crash if trying to restore video settings saved from an earlier version of Quicktime. You may still crash once, but next launch will start without old settings.

What's new in 3.3.7

1. Fixed bug that would causes some systems to crash when dropping movie files on one already playing
2. Fixed bug that would cause chat window scroll position to jump when new chat comes ine

What's new in 3.3.6

1. Chat window supports Drag and Drop text to input area (limited to a maximum of 20 lines per drop)
2. You can Drag and Drop a QuickTime movie or music file (e.g., mp3) onto your local video window and it will play out in place of your live audio/video. Choose Stop Playing from pop-up menu or drop another file to terminate. If the movie includes an alpha channel, the movie will be overlayed on your live video.
3. New "Load from file..." option on Chat window pop-up menu to allow loading chat content from a text file. Lines are loaded at a fixed rate of 1 line every 2 seconds. For faster or slower playout, use longer or shorter lines.
4. Fixed bugs with audio/video file recording
5. New option on Record Settings to choose whether you wish to omit full addresses (username.code) from recordings. If full addresses are included (the default), then anyone who receives the iVisit recording can call you back.
6. New feature to play an iVisit recording as a Welcome video on first launch. This will play only one time. Choose "Play Welcome" from the Help menu to view again.

What's new in 3.3.2

1. Improved video quality, especially for some camera/lighting situations
2. Sharing window allows you to share a portion of your screen, either as a snapshot or continuously updated. To use this feature, open the Sharing window and press the screen capture button (monitor picture). This will open a blue floating selection rectangle which you can size and position over the region of your screen you wish to share. Click quickly on the Send button (up arrow), to save a snapshot to a file, display it in sharing window, and transmit to others you are connected to. To send continuous updates, hold down the Send button for a moment until it locks down. With continuous capture, the capture is not saved to a file or displayed in the Sharing window. The selection rectangle will color red to indicate live capture in progress. You can test by connecting to yourself. When someone else is sending live screen updates to you, a new menu item will appear on the Sharing window that says "Live screen: username". To receive their screen, make sure this item is selected on the menu.
3. iVisit recording capabilities have been upgraded to include recording of files, URL's, and live screens that appear in Sharing window. Since the file content is including in the recording, the recorded files may grow quite large.
4. iVisit recordings are now saved with extension ".ivb" instead of ".ivf" (to avoid a conflict on the Windows platform)
5. Miscellaneous bug fixes

What's new in 3.2.2

1. Internal upgrades to support future features
2. Minor bug fixes

What's new in 3.2.1

1. Text channels have been added to directory Listings, so that you can communicate with other people in the Listing without connecting to them. When you join a Listing on the directory (blue men icon), a new button is added to the chat window that lets you send messages to all members of the Listing.

2. There are new options to add announcements to Homes. Announcements appear in chat window when someone joins Room or Listing.

3. There is new option to add URL links to a Home. These appear with a different icon than ordinary info or announcement text. When clicked on they are loaded in default www browser.

4. There is new option to allow home moderators to edit info and announcements.

5. There are new options to control application auto-launching when files are received. Click the A button on the File Sharing window for info on how this works.

6. A bug was fixed which could cause dropped connections with server or other users.

What's new in 3.1.2

1. A new file transfer capability has been added by which you can transmit files, folders and URL's to other iVisit users you are connected to.

To receive files, open the sharing window by choosing "File sharing" from the "Window" menu. Make sure the Receive (downward pointing arrow) button is depressed. When someone tries to send you a file, folder or URL, you will be presented with a confirmation dialog by which you can accept or reject it. If you accept it, the file will automatically be opened as soon as reception is complete. DO NOT RECEIVE FILES FROM PEOPLE YOU DO NOT TRUST. To prevent auto-open on reception, you can press down the Pause (2 vertical bars) button. Then any received files will not be opened until you press the Forward (right pointing arrow) button. To stop a reception in progress, press the X button. To stop receiving files, pop up the Receive button or close the Sharing window. To block reception from a certain user, press down the button second from left on their video window. To see all files received from a certain user, choose "View received files" from the pop-up menu on their video window.

To send files, open the sharing window by choosing "File sharing" from the "Window" menu. Drag and drop a file, folder, or URL string onto the sharing window. This will cause the file, folder, or URL to open locally, and add it to the pop-up menu on the Sharing window. Then depress the Send (upward pointing arrow) button to make it available to anyone who is currently receiving from you. To see who is currently receiving files from you, check the icon to the left of the camera icon on their video window. If it has a red slash through it, it means they are not receiving files from you, either because they have not opened Sharing window, have not depressed Receive button, have blocked reception from you, or are using an older version of iVisit. You can also choose a file to send by pressing the Files (right-most) button on the Sharing window. As long as the Send button is depressed, any file you view via the sharing window (e.g., from drag-and-drop, pop-up menu, Back, or Forward buttons) will be shared with others. However, files will not be re-transmitted to people who have them already; it will simply trigger them to re-open that file. To stop a transmission in progress, press the X button. To send a "slide show," you can preload the sharing window by dropping files onto it with the Send button up. Then, push down Send, and page through the files, using Back/Forward buttons or pop-up menu.

2. There is a new User Settings... menu item on remote video windows, where you can give special privileges to a user (e.g., "auto-accept" all calls).

3. The "Account Activation" dialog will no longer pop open automatically when an iVisit identity is not found on the system.

What's new in 2.6b2

1. A new button has been added to remote video windows and the Guest List that allows you to block incoming private chat and audio. If you depress the "P" button (so it shows red), you will not receive any private chat or audio from that individual. If that individual is also running this version (or newer), they will see the "Private" button disabled on your remote video window. People running older versions will not see that private is blocked, and can keep sending you private messages (which you will not see).

If you select the option "Block private by default" under the "Rooms" section of the Preferences, then the block private button will inititally be selected for each person in the room. To allow incoming private messages, you must unblock it manually for each person.

2. A bug has been fixed that could cause the chat window to become corrupt occassionally.

What's new in 2.6b1

1. Fixed a bug that would allow people with a special ("patched") version of iVisit to continue receiving your video after you disconnected them.
2. Fixed a bug that limited the number of bookmarks that could be displayed from a single folder
3. Changed moderation function so that you must join a room to become a moderator or to boot someone. In addition, when someone is booted, a chat message is automatically broadcasted to all members of the room indicating a boot (or removal) was performed.
4. Added an option to Preferences that allows you to hide from people by changing your nickname. If you select this option, then only people who have you bookmarked under your current nickname will be able to find you. In addition (IMPORTANT), if you select this option, then people using a version of iVisit older than 2.5 will not be able to find you (even if they have the correct nickname). Note that you may bookmark someone multiple times, for each nickname you know them by. All bookmarks for a single person will appear grouped together in your bookmarks display, and they are all contained in a single bookmark file. When someone tries to connect to you, they will be recognized by the first name you bookmarked them by (Blacklist and other call screening options apply regardless of what nickname someone is currently using).
5. Added the ability to add an "Announcement" or "Info" message to a room you own (like the message you see when you first connect to the server). An Announcement will appear whenever someone joins your room. Info will appear if someone selects your room and presses the "i" button (or if they press the "info" button on a password request dialogue for a locked room). To set an Announcement or Info for a room you own, first prepare the text in an ordinary ASCII or text file, and save it using a file name that ends in ".txt". Then, select your room in the Directory window and press the "i" button. It will display the usual message window, but with 2 additional buttons "Add Info" or "Add Announce." Select one button or the other and it will give you a file selection dialogue where you can select the text file you prepared. After you select the file, it will show it formatted as it will appear in the message window. Press Okay if you want to keep it, Cancel if you want leave your current message (if any) as is, or Delete if you want to remove any message.
6. Added an option to automatically create "waiting rooms" when a room is full. If you select the "Create waiting rooms when full" option, then when someone tries to join your room when it is full, they will automatically be put into a waiting room. Waiting rooms are automatically created as needed (8 people per waiting room), and deleted when empty. When someone leaves the main room, the first person "in line" will automatically be "promoted" to the main room. If there are multiple waiting rooms, one person from each room will be promoted to the next waiting room, so the first waiting room always contains the first 8 people in line, and so on. If someone leaves the waiting room, they lose their place in line. If you boot someone from your room, they are also prohibited from all waiting rooms (which cannot be joined directly). If you have moderation privileges and choose "Remove from room" on the pop-up menu associated with a remote video window, then that person will be moved to the end of the line to get back in (if there is a line). Versions of iVisit older than 2.5 cannot be redirected to a waiting room; they will get a message saying they must upgrade to get in line.
7. Added new folder properties enforced by the server: no private rooms allowed, no moderated rooms allowed, no waiting rooms allowed. Those options which are not allowed in a certain folder will be grayed out when you create a room in that folder. Clients older than 2.6 will get an error message if they try to create the wrong type of room.
8. Added a new Preferences option to disable sound effects (i.e., clicking, ringing, etc.). Some system beeps may still occur to alert you to certain error conditions.

What's new in 2.5b2

1. Fixed a bug that would occassionally cause you to lose ownership of a room you created, preventing deletion and editting.
2. Fixed a few minor bugs

What's new in 2.5b1

1. A Room you create will remain permanently on the server until you delete it, as long as it is used periodically
2. If you own a Room on the server, pressing the "pencil" button on the directory will allow you to edit (some) of its properties (e.g., password, comment, etc.), or delete it. You can only own 1 room at a time.
3. A Room may be assigned a moderator password. Anyone who knows the moderator password may boot people out of it by selecting their name and pressing the "boot" button at the bottom of the directory. In addition, the owner of the room may always boot people (whether the room is private, open, or moderated). Currently, a booted user is prevented from entering the room for the next 5 days (this is subject to change).
4. If you are the owner of a room, you automatically have moderation privileges. If you do not own the room, but know the moderator password, choose "Moderate room" from the Settings menu to enter the password and become a moderator.

1. A new feature allows you to record an iVisit "session" if the other participants agree to allow it. If you select the "Record Connections" option, then activating the Record button will record the audio/video/chat which you send and receive. If you do not select the "Others may record me" option, then your audio/video/chat will not be included in session recordings made by other people. You can determine whether you are allowed to record someone by examining the drop down info panel below their video window. A red "reel-to-reel" icon will light up if someone is recording you, and also a dialog alert appears when they first begin.

2. The network protocols have been revised to support Network Address Translation (NAT), whereby an iVisit host may have a private IP address, but communicate to the outside world through a public IP address on a proxy, router or firewall. This new capabilility is not yet operational in 2.2b1. It will be activated in a subsequent version after this version has been thoroughly tested.

3. Audio Device Settings are saved across iVisit launches, as in all previous versions except 2.1b4. Once again Performa users may need to discard their Preferences file each time they launch iVisit in order for it to work properly.

Changes Since 2.1b3

1. A bug that sometimes caused automatic disconnection from other people when you exitted a Listing on the directory has been fixed

2. In previous versions, if you chose "Refuse" for an incoming connection request, it would give that person an automatic busy signal whenever they tried to connect in the future (almost like Blacklisting them). This has been changed so that the automatic busy signal for that person only lasts until you quit iVisit (or until you edit their Bookmark).

3. A bug that prevented bookmarks for manually entered IP addresses from working properly has been fixed.

4. "Double clicks" to open folders in the Directory Window were sometimes not detected if you were using a camera that required a lot of CPU time (e.g., a Quickcam). This has been fixed.

5. Audio Device Settings are no longer saved across iVisit launches. Previous versions would corrupt the system on some Performa models when it attempted to restore the settings, forcing people to discard their Preferences file prior to each iVisit launch. With this version you must reset your audio device settings each time you launch if you are not using the default settings. A better solution will be available in a future version.

Changes Since 2.1b2

1. A bug that occurred with the Apple Zoomed Video digitizer component has been fixed

2. A bug that occassionally produced inaccurate (very large) outgoing data rate displays in the Network Stats window has been fixed

Changes Since 2.1b1

1. If you attempt to connect to a bookmark for someone who is not currently connected to the directory server, a dialog explains why the connection attempt failed.

2. A bug that sometimes caused re-connection attempts after leaving a room has been fixed

3. A blue border highlights the chat window text area or the video banner area when they are accepting input

4. When Quit is selected, the application will try to insure that all connections are successfully closed before exitting. This may delay shutdown for up to 10 seconds.

Changes Since 2.0b4

1. When you join a room, its members are listed in a single "Guest List" window, so you do not need to open a separate video window for each member unless you wish to.

2. A recording facility allows you to record your own audio/video/chat to a file, which you can attach to an e-mail or post on a www site. iVisit can then be used to play the file.

3. A memory leak that occurred while using the "Video Device Settings..." dialog has been fixed.

4. A bug that caused the Directory status message to be incorrect sometimes has been fixed.

5. An "info" button has been added to the password dialogue when attempting to join a password-protected area on the directory, so you can easily get information that MIGHT tell you how to get the password.

6. You must now "double-click" on a directory server item to see what is below it. Previously, clicking once on an item that was already selected had the same effect as a "double-click."

7. When someone who you have blacklisted appears on the directory, a black dot replaces their face icon, their name appears in italics, and their comment is replaced with "(blacklisted)."

Changes Since 2.0b3
1. Bookmarks files are now cross-platform. Bookmarks created with Windows version 2.0b4 should be useable by the Macintosh version 2.0b4 and vice versa. Running 2.0b4 once will convert existing bookmarks to the cross-platform format.

2. The bookmark clean-up algorithm has been changed. Each time you exit iVisit, all but the 50 newest bookmarks in each of the Incoming, Outgoing, and Autolog folder are automatically deleted. Any bookmark in these folder older than 3 days is also deleted on exit, as in previous versions.

Changes Since 2.0b2
1. Another bug that would sometimes cause you to spontaneously leave the room or listing you had joined and sometimes join a different room has been fixed.

2. Color video should now work with the Media100 board, and other boards that can only output 32-bit color

Changes Since 2.0b1
1. A bug that would sometimes cause you to spontaneously leave the room or listing you had joined and join a different room has been fixed.

Changes Since 1.0.8
1. The Directory Server interface and functionality has been completely redesigned to better support distinct communities of interest.
2. The Bookmark interface and functionality has been completely redesigned to support call screening, user-specific access privileges, Do Not Disturb mode, and various other features.
3. Online help is available in the form of pop-up "tool tips" for buttons, and some descriptive text (accessed via ? button on Directory Browser).
4. Color video is now available as an option. Base color video requires roughly twice the bandwidth as the current gray scale video, while "High" resolution requires about 3 times the bandwidth of gray scale. If you are making color available (via Codec Settings... ), receivers may elect to receive only the black and white portion to get a better frame rate and/or reduce bandwidth consumption.
5. When you join a room, iVisit does not automatically begin receiving video from all participants. You must open the video panel to begin receiving video from those participants you choose (this should help people on low bandwidth connections, who may have problems if they try to receive video from all participants).
6. A Network Settings dialog now controls caps on transmission/reception rates, and you can no longer set the reception rate for particular windows.

Changes Since 1.0.7
13. A bug that sometimes caused crashes when quitting iVisit has been fixed
14. A bug that sometimes caused crashes when 16 video windows are open has been fixed
15. A bug that sometimes caused crashes when no windows are open has been fixed

Changes Since 1.0.5
9. Up/down buttons on directory browser should now work properly
10. Some video digitizing devices that did not work previously should now work
11. Crashes or other failures after repeated "Paste" operations to the video window should no longer occur
12. Your IP address is not displayed to people who attempt to connect to you, unless you accept their connection.

Changes Since 1.0.3
4. A bug that sometimes prevented chat transmission has been fixed
5. Clicking on a control no longer brings the window that contains it to the front. This allows the chat window to remain in front and continue accepting input. You must click outside of a control to select a window.
6. Pre-recorded iVisit media files can be played out (a later version will allow you to create them)
7. Audio reception should be much more reliable, especially on a modem, and when video is also arriving
8. Much internal re-organization to prepare for more advanced features to come

Changes Since 1.0
1. A bug that caused crashes when multiple connection request dialogs appeared simultaneously has been fixed
2. Outgoing audio data is more effectively prioritized over video data
3. Paused video images are more effectively updated to reduce blurring
